Zoe Ze Zhou
Zoe Ze Zhou - Modern Artist
Many of my pieces contain material that is living or used to be living, or create the illusion that they are living.
I use living plants in my installation, to sprout them as I'm developing the piece. They might die depending on my audience during the presentation. My work tends to have an intention to create a world that people can stay in, to create a space that is different than our world, to give audiences some kind of illusions. Some of my pieces move of their own volition, to create an illusion that they are living creatures or to connect the audiences with the pieces themselves. Triggered by my father’s death, I started to use parts of my body as the materials. I'm using my hair to stitch my families who passed away. My hair contains part of their DNA, they helped me to create the pieces without their knowledge.
My art has no accent.
Art has always been a hobby in my life, but it wasn’t serious until I came to the U.S. for
high school. It was hard for me to communicate with others in daily life and I still wasn’t
comfortable living with my host family. I didn’t want to worry about my parents so it left me no
one to talk to. At that moment, art was my escape. I was powerless to verbally express my
thoughts and ideas. Art saved me from the loneliness I felt. It was safe for me to express my
feelings. My pieces were more than just beautiful sculptures that please on the eye; they gave me
a voice, a way to uniquely illustrate my point of view. Art was my language; the shapes,
materials, and colors in my drawings came together in a wonderful, and liberating way.
It was summer vacation, so I went back to China to gather around with my family. We
were having dinner while my cousin complained to us about her boss and colleague. I felt
frightened, I don’t want my life to be like hers, to deal with work and people I won't be able to
enjoy. Especially not after I already see what my art can bring to people. After that summer in
2015, I was determined to grow as an artist.
